Meta-analysis of 15 studies showed that
Prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (PBSO) and bilateral prophylactic mastectomy (BPM) were both associated with a decreased Breast Cancer risk in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Similar findings were observed in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers separately.
Moreover, contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) significantly decreased contralateral BC incidence in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. In addition, all-cause mortality was significantly lower for patients with CPM?.
These aspects need to be discussed with all families with BRCA 1 or 2 mutations.
At Asian Cancer Institute our counsellors will be happy to answer questions regarding the same.
